When I started programming C and C++ were the first languages that I learnt. These languages are extremely powerful. The IDE that I used at that time was very basic, and it was like coding in a notepad without any support from editor itself. Today I got an email about this free IDE for C++ from a member of the development team. I checked out it, and I am quite impressed with this.

Code Blocks is a Free and Open Source IDE for C++ coding. It is really terrific in its functionality, and makes the coding process a lot simpler, and faster. Code Blocks works on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Here are the aspects that I loved in Code Blocks:

Very Good Debugging Capabilities

Code Blocks makes it very easy to debug your C++ code. You can put breakpoints through out the code, and define custom watches. You can even put conditions on breakpoints, so that execution is paused only if a condition is true. Some of the other Debugging Features:

Floola is a free software that you can use in place of iTunes to manage your iPod. Great aspect of Floola is that you can install it directly on your iPod, and run it from there. Floola is feature packed. However, a big drawback of Floola is that it does not supports iPod Touch and iPhone, and does not supports iTunes 9 (at the time of writing this article). If you have a iPod Touch or iPone, you can use SharePod instead. If you are a Linux use, try GtkPod.

Most of us use P2P software like Limewire or uTorrent to download and share files. In P2P sharing, your software tries to connect to some other computer out there that is runnig a similar program, and tries to download file from that. In some of the cases, those computers could have been compromised, or could have been set up as decoy computers to get the IP of the computers that request such files, and even to send spoofed files to the requesting computer (your computer, in this case). This means that you can end up downloading some stuff that you did not want to.

A simple way that P2P users use to avoid this is to block the known IP addresses of such computers. So, if your computer tries to connect to any computer that is in the blocked IP address list, or a computer in the blocked IP address list tries to connect to your computer, that connection will be denied.

Note: Many people also use such program so that they can download the copyrighted stuff (music, movies) more safely. I do not encourage you to download any copyrighted stuff, and that’s not what this program should be used for.

When you install PeerBlock, you can choose the type of IP that you want to block. The most useful option is “P2P” that blocks the known IP of the Anti-P2P organizations. Some other options are also available. After installation, PeerBlock will fetch the list of such IP from the servers. PeerBlock will also keep the list updated itself, so that any new IPs that are identified can be automatically added to that list.

Here is a small video tutorial that explains how to block IP addresses using PeerBlock.

PeerBlock uses lot of source code from PeerGuardian (the open source software with a similar functionality). The developers of PeerBlock mention that they have removed lof of bugs that were present in PeerGuardian, and have made it more stable to use. PeerBlock is being actively maintained, and the bugs are addressed.
